FLORIANA PIED-À-TERRE
Floriana, Malta — works in progress
Set along the edge of the Grand Harbour in Floriana, this apartment forms part of a 1960s residential block—an architecture of modest modernity, shaped by function and time. The renovation reimagines the interior as a sequence of interconnected volumes, carefully tuned to enhance flow, clarity, and comfort.
At the heart of the design is a desire to dissolve boundaries. Internal walls were removed to allow spaces to speak to one another—adjacent rooms now breathe as a whole. Doorways were widened and subtly realigned, establishing a new rhythm of movement and sightlines, where rooms unfold naturally and intuitively.
A secondary entrance into the bathroom was introduced, connecting it to the main bedroom. This gesture transforms the bathroom into a flexible space—at once private ensuite and accessible guest facility, shifting its role as needed with ease.
Two bespoke steel and glass hinged doors provide the ability to enclose the living and dining areas—an architectural threshold that allows for thermal control without compromising the openness of the plan. Their materiality offers a quiet contrast: transparent yet grounded, industrial yet refined.
Throughout, oak parquet flooring lends the apartment a continuous warmth underfoot, guiding the eye and anchoring the space in softness. In the wet areas—the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry—this timber gives way to more durable surfaces, practical yet in harmony with the whole.
The result is a calm reordering of space—one that honours the apartment’s mid-century origins while offering a new clarity of use and atmosphere. Light, material, and movement are orchestrated with restraint, creating a home that feels both timeless and quietly resolved.
